We want everyone to be able to use the CalKal website easily, including people with disabilities. Accessibility is built into the site itself, not added through an external "accessibility widget" or overlay.
Standard and level
The site was adapted in line with Israel's Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities Law, 5758-1998, and the Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities (Service Accessibility Adjustments) Regulations, 5773-2013. The adjustments follow Israeli Standard IS 5568, which is based on the WCAG 2.0 guidelines at level AA. We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 at level AA.
What we did to make the site accessible
- Keyboard navigation: every link, button and form can be reached with the keyboard, and focus is clearly visible. Each page starts with a "Skip to main content" link.
- Screen readers: pages use semantic structure, with headings, navigation landmarks and labelled fields. Form messages are announced automatically.
- Text alternatives: every app screenshot has a description of what it shows.
- Contrast: text colors have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against their background.
- Resizable text: you can enlarge text up to 200% with your browser settings without losing content or functionality.
- Reduced motion: if you turned on "reduce motion" on your device, animations on the site are turned off. The feature switcher on the home page only advances by itself while it is on screen, and stops as soon as you use it.
- Language and direction: the site is available in Hebrew (right to left) and English (left to right), and each page declares its language in code.
- Pop-up windows: every window closes with the Esc key, and focus returns to where you were.
How we tested
We tested the site with automated tools (axe and Lighthouse) and manually with a keyboard, at phone, tablet and desktop widths, in Hebrew and in English.
